Hempsey's CBD is a Southern California-based CBD retailer selling online and through local partners. The goal was to refresh their brand identity, improve product discoverability, and deliver a website that educated new customers while providing a seamless shopping experience.

As the sole researcher and designer on this project, I led end-to-end UX strategy and execution in close collaboration with the client, encompassing user research, brand identity design, and iterative A/B testing and refinement.

Hempsey's CBD came to me needing more than just a website refresh — they needed a digital experience that could bridge the gap between consumer skepticism and confident purchasing. I started by immersing myself in the CBD landscape, auditing competitors and conducting user research to understand what was holding potential customers back. What emerged was a clear pattern: users wanted education before commerce. From there, I redesigned the brand identity, mapped the user journey, and crafted a clean, intuitive eCommerce experience that put information first and made the path to purchase feel natural. The result was a modernized platform that gave Hempsey's CBD the digital foundation to educate, build trust, and convert customers with confidence.

Hempsey's CBD brought me on to lead both the rebrand and full UX redesign of their digital experience. I started with deep discovery — auditing the competitive landscape and conducting user research to identify what was preventing customers from purchasing CBD online with confidence. The findings were clear: users needed education before commerce.

Armed with those insights, I rebuilt the brand from the ground up — new logo, refreshed visual identity, and cohesive product branding — then translated research into wireframes, user flows, and high-fidelity screens. Every design decision was pressure-tested through usability and A/B testing before final delivery.

The result was a modernized eCommerce platform and brand identity that gave Hempsey's CBD the foundation to educate, build trust, and convert customers with confidence.

WHAT IS CBD? Before diving into the design work, the conversation with the client started at the beginning — what exactly is CBD? Cannabidiol (CBD) is one of the active compounds found in the hemp plant and is closely associated with medical marijuana, though the two are often misunderstood as the same thing. Unlike marijuana, CBD does not produce a psychoactive effect. It is available in a variety of forms including tinctures, edibles, and beverages, and has gained widespread recognition for its wellness applications. The World Health Organization has noted that CBD shows no indicators of abuse or dependence potential, and to date, no public health concerns have been associated with the use of pure CBD.

INFORMING THE USER One of the greatest challenges in the CBD space is overcoming the widespread misconception that CBD produces the same effects as marijuana. A core objective of this project was to address that stigma head-on — designing an experience that clearly communicated the benefits and distinctions of CBD through an accessible, informative knowledge base. By grounding the design in real user research, the goal was to create a website that not only educated first-time visitors but also delivered an exceptional shopping experience that attracted and retained both new and existing CBD customers.

REDESIGNING THE HEMPSEY'S CBD BRAND At the client's request, I redesigned the Hempsey's CBD brand identity from the ground up. This included a full logo redesign and the development of updated brand guidelines applied directly to Hempsey's CBD product line — creating a cohesive, modernized visual identity that better reflected the brand's positioning and appeal to its target audience.

MARKET OPPORTUNITY An audit of the current CBD market revealed a saturated digital landscape where most competitors lead with aggressive product imagery and promotional messaging, leaving little room for user education. This approach overlooks a critical gap — many potential customers, particularly first-time buyers, lack the foundational knowledge needed to make informed purchasing decisions. This presented a clear opportunity to differentiate Hempsey's CBD by prioritizing education at the forefront of the experience, empowering users with the information they need before guiding them toward a confident purchase.

INSIGHTS FROM THE FIELD To ground the design in real user behavior, I conducted a user study with six participants to uncover the most pressing pain points around CBD usage and online purchasing. The goal was to develop a deeper understanding of user attitudes toward CBD products and identify the key factors that would drive confidence and intent to purchase online.

SOLVING THIS CHALLENGE Armed with a clear understanding of user pain points, I translated research insights into action by conducting a focused ideation session. From there, I developed a user flow and initial lo-fi wireframes to map and analyze the early stages of the user journey — establishing a strong structural foundation before moving into higher-fidelity design.

WIREFRAMING FROM USER FEEDBACK Using insights gathered directly from user research, I translated key findings into low-to-mid fidelity wireframes — shaping the structural foundation of the Hempsey's CBD website around the real needs, behaviors, and expectations of its target audience.

UI DESIGN Among the key screens designed for the Hempsey's CBD website were the home screen, crafted to educate and engage first-time visitors; a product finder to guide customers toward the right CBD product for their needs; and an informational page to build trust and deepen product knowledge throughout the shopping journey.
